Every Can Counts enters Red Bull Soapbox Race

Colleagues at Every Can Counts are getting ready to compete in this year’s Red Bull Soapbox Race.

Due to take place at Alexandra Palace on Saturday, 22 June, the not-for-profit team will race against 55 other teams in a bid to take home first place with their homemade soapbox cart.

Aptly named Chitty Chitty Can Can following a public poll on their social media, the soapbox has been designed to look like a recycling collection truck with a stylish twist. Complete with an eye-catching paint job, chrome engine pipes and a fur interior, Every Can Counts have ensured that all eyes will be on their soapbox as it takes to the track.

Set to be driven by Every Can Counts’ Programme Manager Chris Latham-Warde, the soapbox cart will be judged on creativity, speed, and showmanship, with Executive Director, Tom Giddings, riding alongside Chris as a passenger as the soapbox takes on the downhill course outside Alexandra Palace.

To raise awareness of the recyclability of drink cans, Tom will also be wearing a colourful homemade suit made of over 350 cans.

Tom Giddings, Executive Director for Every Can Counts, said: “The Red Bull Soapbox Race is a date we always mark in our calendars, and our team couldn’t be more excited to take part this year.

“In our recycling collection truck themed soapbox, we’re hoping we will be crowned winners of the race as well as draw attention to the topic of recycling. Aluminium can be recycled time and time again without loss of quality, and every empty drink can that is recycled can be back on sale as a brand-new can in just 60 days.

“As they enjoy the race, we hope spectators will take action to learn more about what they can do to contribute to the UK’s drink can recycling rate, which hit a record 10.7 billion cans being collected for recycling in 2023.”

Every Can Counts is a unique partnership formed between drink can manufacturers, drink can fillers and the wider recycling industry, all with the goal of reaching a 100% recycling rate for drink cans. The programme provides free recycling support to businesses and organisations throughout the UK.
