Trump slaps 25% tariff on beer and aluminium can imports
On Wednesday, the Trump administration announced it would impose a 25% tariff on all imported beer, expanding its aluminium tariff policy to include both the beverage and empty aluminium cans.
According to a notice from the Commerce Department published in the Federal Register, these new tariffs will take effect starting at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Friday, April 4.
The updated tariff list includes a specific code for malt-based beer, but does not reference any codes for beer imported in glass bottles.
This announcement comes just before President Trump is expected to unveil broader retaliatory tariffs aimed at U.S. trading partners—a move likely to intensify the ongoing global trade tensions and raise consumer prices.
The decision could significantly impact beer imports, which topped $7.5 billion in 2024 based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Mexico was the leading source, exporting $6.3 billion worth of beer to the U.S. last year. Other top exporters included the Netherlands with $683 million, Ireland with $192 million, and Canada with $73 million.
