Toyo Seikan and Coca-Cola win prize for lightweight can
Toyo Seikan has been recognised for a lightweight can for Coca-Cola’s 185g Georgia-brand coffee product.
Toyo Seikan and Coca‑Cola (Japan) Company, Limited have been jointly awarded the Research and Development Category prize at the 49th Kinoshita Award, hosted by the Japan Packaging Technology Association.
Both companies were also recognised at the 48th Kinoshita Award for the 500ml Coca-Cola lightweight bottle made from 100% recycled PET, receiving the Improvement & Rationalization Category prize for the second consecutive year.
Toyo Seikan and Coca-Cola have been working for many years to reduce the weight of their beverage containers.
Since August 2024, the aluminium beverage cans used for Georgia-brand products have used Toyo Seikan’s Compression Bottom Reform (CBR) technology to increase bottom pressure resistance.
This has reduced materials usage by 13% compared to conventional 185g aluminium beverage cans, reducing the weight of the can body from 7.0g to 6.1g while maintaining the same internal pressure resistance despite the thinner aluminium. This is the result of the technical capabilities of and partnership between Toyo Seikan and Coca-Cola.
