Coleus Packaging upgrades metal closure production facility
South African manufacturer Coleus Packaging has invested about R200 million in new equipment at its Alrode facility in Johannesburg, as part of a broader effort to improve efficiency and product quality in its metal closures business.
The latest upgrades include advanced coating and resizing technology, along with a high-performance punching and lining machine supplied by Italian equipment specialist SACMI. The new line replaces two older production lines while maintaining output levels and improving operational efficiency, according to the company.
Further enhancements are planned, with an additional printing machine expected to be installed in the near term. The investment builds on earlier upgrades, including a R30 million crown cork production system introduced in 2024, reflecting an ongoing strategy to modernise equipment and maintain consistent performance.
Coleus Packaging’s development also aligns with its integration into the global Guala Closures group, which acquired a majority stake through its subsidiary Astir Vitogiannis. The multinational group operates dozens of facilities worldwide and carries out regular audits to benchmark performance across its network.
Despite only recently joining the group, the Alrode operation has already been recognised as a top-performing facility within the organisation. Management says continuous improvement remains a priority, supported by internal reviews and operational planning sessions aimed at strengthening performance further.
Beyond South Africa, the group is expanding its footprint across Africa and other regions, including recent acquisitions and new operations in markets such as India, Kenya and Nigeria. Coleus is contributing to this expansion by supplying customers in countries like Ghana while working to grow its presence across Southern Africa and beyond.
The company has also maintained a strong focus on compliance and sustainability, securing multiple ISO certifications covering health, safety and quality standards, and pursuing additional accreditation related to energy management.
