Aluminium packaging recycling in Spain jumps 21%

APEAL launches new strategy for recycling

Recycling of aluminium packaging increased by 21% in Spain last year, according to new data.

The country was able to recycle 64,287 tons of aluminium packaging through a variety of different methods and schemes.

In 2019, there was 52,814 tons recycled meaning the total in 2020 jumped by more than 20%.

In Spain, a total of 123,449 tons of aluminium containers entered the market, meaning that a total recycling rate of 52.1% was achieved.

The European Directive 2018/852 of the European Parliament established recycling targets for various types of packaging.

The EU set a minimum goal of 50% relating to aluminium, to be achieved no later than the end of 2025.

A further minimum target of 60% was also set and that was to be achieved by the end of 2030.

Spain is already well on course to hit that 60% target ahead of schedule.

ARPAL carries out a study every year to find out the tons of aluminium containers recovered in waste management plants.

The main objective of ARPAL is to promote that citizens identify and know the importance of recycling aluminium containers.
