Novelis gets ASI certification at three beverage can plants

Cans

Novelis has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification at three of its North American production facilities in Kentucky, Georgia and Ohio.

The plants produce recycled ingots and sheet that are destined for the production of cans bodies and can ends.

The Berea (KY) and Greensboro (GA) plants recycle used beverage cans (UBCs) into aluminium ingots that are used to produce new beverage cans and ends.

Novelis has previously achieved dual ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Certifications at all 11 of its European manufacturing sites, and at its Yeongju, South Korea, facility. Additionally, its Pindamonhangaba, Brazil, plant has achieved ASI Performance Standard certification.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain.

The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audit of the Novelis North America plants was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI, said: “We sincerely congratulate Novelis on achieving these three Performance Standard Certifications among their North American operations.

“These plants are significant nodes in the North American beverage can market, with one of the plants recycling approximately 20% of the region’s UBCs. We are delighted to see Novelis’ ongoing ASI Certification journey continue to extend through its global operations.”

Tom Boney, Executive Vice President and President, Novelis North America, said: “This certification is the latest step in our sustainability journey and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to providing sustainable aluminium solutions to our valued customers.

“Aligned with our purpose of shaping a sustainable world together, we aim to collaborate and inspire our suppliers, customers and partners throughout the whole value chain to participate in these responsible practices.”
