Podback partners with another council

Eastleigh Borough Council has expanded its weekly recycling service to include coffee pods, in a partnership with Podback. Coffee pods will be collected alongside the council’s food waste collections.

The new coffee pod recycling service is available to all households in the borough.  To get started residents need to sign up for the service on the Podback website.

They will be sent Podback recycling bags, and when full, these can be put out with their food waste recycling bin. Residents living in flats can also participate by placing their bags alongside their communal food waste bin.

Commenting on the new scheme Eastleigh Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment Cllr. Rupert Kyrle said: “We are really pleased to be working with Podback to open up this new kerbside recycling opportunity for our residents. Pod coffee drinkers will now be able to enjoy their coffee machines knowing the pods won’t be going to waste.”

Podback Executive Director Rick Hindley says: “We know that the most convenient way for people to recycle their coffee pods is as part of their Council’s regular service, so we are excited to be working with Eastleigh Borough Council to make that happen.

“Recycling with Podback means tonnes of used pods will be removed from the waste stream, and the materials will be recycled in the UK.”

Once collected, the coffee pods will be sent to specialist recycling plants. Plastic pods are recycled in West Yorkshire, and aluminium pods are recycled in  Cheshire.

The pods are shredded to remove the coffee, and are then used in the manufacture of new products, including packaging, car components and building materials.  The coffee grounds will be treated by anaerobic digestion to create renewable energy (biogas) and soil improver.
