A new product category for the worldwide canmaking industry has been created by Lumos LLC, a new US firm based in Colorado that specialises in OEM design and production technologies.

Depending on the scale of the operation, quality rejects from situation like misfeeds, print registration issues on label change restarts, and colour tone issues due to out of adjustment inkers, will result in rejected aluminium cans at the decoration stage resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost operational cost annually. Even though many of these problems are preventable, the amount of spoilage leads to the annual scrapping of millions of reusable cans, which costs facilities time, resources, and unrecoverable capacity, resulting in lost income annually.

Lumos has introduced a new product category for the canmaking equipment sector called DECOSTRIP, in collaboration with partners Altec Industrial and CTA Do Brasil.

The Solution

To address the challenge, DECOSTRIP technology removes decoration from undamaged cans prior to the curing process. This approach minimises waste, conserves resources, and can reduce Decorator spoilage by as much as 95% annually, boosting sustainable manufacturing practices as well as increasing plant OEE as much as 0.5%. Additionally, it relaxes the administrative tasks linked to training and monitoring colour adherence, easing the necessity for stringent policy enforcement.

DECOSTRIP has been developed by Jonathan Saunders, who brings over two decades of experience in senior technology roles within the can-making industry. His passion for continued problem-solving and innovation has been a driving force behind the founding of Lumos. Here’s what Saunders shares:
