Novelis to close Chesterfield plant
Novelis will close down its plant in Chesterfield, Virginia, as part of a broader consolidation effort.
According to a company spokesperson, the decision is part of a larger restructuring initiative and will result in the loss of more than 70 jobs.
“Novelis is consolidating its U.S. operations and has made the difficult decision to close operations in Richmond,” the company said in a prepared statement.
“As part of Novelis’ long-term growth strategy, we have an opportunity to simplify our operations and streamline our portfolio.
The closure is scheduled for May 30, with 73 employees being laid off. However, the company noted that affected workers may have opportunities for employment at other Novelis locations across North America in 2025.
“We are actively working with impacted employees to explore potential job placements within our other facilities where possible,” a spokesperson said.
The Chesterfield facility specialises in producing rolled aluminium sheets for the construction sector and is the company’s only site in Virginia.
Property records show that a Novelis-affiliated entity owns a nearly 50,000-square-foot building on a 3.5-acre site at 1801 Reymet Road, along with a nearby 21-acre parcel containing industrial buildings at 1701 Reymet Road.
WVNews previously reported on the Chesterfield facility’s closure and recently revealed that Novelis also plans to shut down a site in Fairmont, West Virginia, in June.
Headquartered in Atlanta, Novelis is a major producer of flat-rolled aluminium products and the world’s largest aluminium recycler. The company operates as part of the Mumbai-based Aditya Birla Group and, as of fiscal year 2024, had over 30 manufacturing facilities spanning nine countries.
