Coca-Cola cans recalled

A recent product recall has flagged some cans of Coca-Cola Original Taste due to contamination concerns — specifically, traces of plastic found in select batches.

The issue was first reported earlier this month and has since been categorized as a “Class II” recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This classification means the product could cause short-term or reversible health effects, though the likelihood of serious harm is considered low.

Roughly 864 cases of the soda, packaged in 12-count packs of 12-ounce cans, have been pulled from store shelves in Illinois and Wisconsin. At this time, the recall is limited to those two states. The affected beverages were produced and distributed by Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling, LLC, located in Milwaukee.

“Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling is voluntarily recalling 864 cases of 12-pack Coca-Cola Classic in 12-oz cans in Illinois and Wisconsin,” a company spokesperson said Wednesday in an emailed statement to USA TODAY. “The cases are being withdrawn because they did not meet our high-quality standards. We are taking this voluntary action because nothing is more important to us than providing high-quality products to the people who drink our beverages.”

While the FDA hasn’t given detailed instructions for consumers, the standard advice applies — don’t drink the product, and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
