New upgraded canmaking line in Ghana
Nutrifoods Ghana Limited has commissioned an upgraded canmaking line at its culinary plant in the Tema Industrial Area, marking a significant investment of over US$500,000 to enhance metal packaging capabilities for its Tasty Tom tomato products.
The new line—formally inaugurated by Ghana’s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah—is designed to strengthen the company’s packaging safety systems, tighten quality-control protocols, and support a highly reliable 24-hour production schedule. The upgrade forms part of Nutrifoods’ broader strategy to optimise pack integrity, increase throughput and align its operations with the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.
Debrah praised the company for driving job creation through its around-the-clock operating model, noting that Nutrifoods’ extended value chain has generated more than 2,000 jobs. He added that the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry is finalising a comprehensive programme aimed at incentivising industrial productivity, increasing value addition and improving supply chain efficiency for local manufacturers.
Addressing the company’s reliance on imported tomato paste from China and the United States, the Chief of Staff acknowledged the substantial domestic production potential but highlighted persistent supply chain gaps. He said government’s forthcoming industrial programme will prioritise value addition to local raw materials to help eliminate periodic food gluts and bolster industrial resilience.
Nutrifoods Managing Director and Business Head, Jay Anjaria, said the upgraded metal can line reflects the company’s commitment to global manufacturing standards and consumer safety. He emphasised that Nutrifoods’ brands—developed, processed and packaged in Ghana—are benchmarked against international quality protocols, including the FSSC 22000 certification that made the company the first biscuit manufacturer in West Africa to achieve GFSI recognition.
Anjaria added that Nutrifoods continues to invest in technical capacity-building to support the future of advanced food and packaging manufacturing in Ghana. He reaffirmed the company’s compliance with all regulatory requirements and its commitment to transparent, responsible production practices.
Nutrifoods Ghana Limited, a joint venture between Olam International and Sanyo Foods, operates biscuit and culinary production plants in Tema, supplying both domestic and export markets. Its portfolio includes the fortified Tasty Tom Tomato Mix and biscuit brands such as Perk, Nutricia and King Cracker.
