EGA completes acquisition of 80% of Italian aluminium recycling firm Eco Green
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has completed its acquisition of an 80 percent majority stake in Italian secondary aluminium producer Eco Green, following initial intent announced in April and subsequent regulatory clearance. The move significantly boosts EGA’s European footprint as demand for low-carbon metal continues to accelerate across the packaging and manufacturing sectors.
Now rebranded as EGA Eco Green, the Italian firm operates two facilities in northeast Italy, specializing in scrap collection, sorting, casting, and dross processing. The company distributes over 70,000 tonnes of recycled material annually:
- Villafranca di Verona: Processes and sorts approximately 23,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap per year.
- Nogara di Verona: Utilises a 30,000-tonne nameplate capacity furnace to cast over 20,000 tonnes of secondary sows annually, alongside dross processing.
An expansion project currently underway at Nogara di Verona will add a further 20,000 tonnes of annual recycled aluminium capacity, with completion slated for December 2026. Founding family members, the Scappinis, retain a 20 percent minority stake and remain active within the management team.
The deal builds on EGA’s rapid expansion across major international recycling hubs. EGA currently controls over 400,000 tonnes of annual recycling capacity across the UAE, the US, Germany, and Italy, with an additional 200,000 tonnes under development:
- Germany: Following the 2024 acquisition of EGA Leichtmetall, EGA announced a major project to increase the plant’s recycling capacity more than six-fold.
- United States: EGA acquired an 80% stake in EGA Spectro Alloys in 2024, reaching 165,000 tonnes of annual capacity in July 2025. A second phase adding 35,000 tonnes of billet capacity is targeted for first hot metal in 2027.
- UAE: Production continues to ramp up at the new Al Taweelah facility, the country’s largest recycling plant with a 185,000-tonne annual capacity.
Speaking on the deal, Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, chief executive of EGA, said: “Eco Green makes EGA an even better partner for Europe’s green future and further expands our growing global aluminium recycling business. Eco Green also brings us capability in Europe’s aluminium scrap market, which is important for our expanding recycling operations in the continent.”
Luca Scappini, chief executive of EGA Eco Green, added: “Becoming part of EGA unlocks our potential for further growth, as a key pillar of EGA’s expanding European aluminium recycling network. It will enable us to deliver even better products and services to our customers.”
Europe represents the world’s third-largest recycled aluminium market behind the US and China. EGA already exports roughly 600,000 tonnes of primary aluminium to European industrial markets each year.
