World Can Experience 2027 unveils 3-piece technical training for Dubai and Spain
World Can Experience has announced its 3PC technical training programme for WCE 2027, with six specialist sessions focused on the manufacturing of 3-piece tinplate food cans.
The 3PC programme will be delivered by two experienced specialists from the global metal packaging industry, Tjaart Schutte and Andrew Buchan, who will lead three technical sessions each across the two WCE 2027 editions.
The 2PC technical training programme will be announced soon, with details of the specialist trainers and six dedicated sessions to follow.
WCE Dubai 2027 will take place from 20–22 January 2027, while WCE Spain 2027 will take place from 11–13 May 2027 in Benidorm, Spain.
Technical training remains one of the central pillars of World Can Experience. The programme is designed for professionals directly involved in the technical and operational side of can manufacturing, including plant managers, production managers, maintenance teams, quality professionals, engineers, technical directors and other technical decision-makers.
Rather than focusing only on general industry topics, the programme addresses specific challenges related to double-seaming, corrosion, thermal processing, infant formula packaging, operational performance and shelf-life testing.
The six courses will cover the following areas:
• Rectangular Double Seaming – Engineering challenges and best practices in rectangular double seaming, translating theory and computer simulation into reliable, high-quality non-round metal packaging.
• Minimizing Internal & External Corrosion in Manufacturing, Filling and Logistics – Practical strategies to prevent tinplate corrosion throughout the entire production chain, from protective coatings and manufacturing processes to filling, handling and warehouse storage.
• Structural Engineering of Cans for Thermal Processing – Understanding the key design principles that enable cans to withstand thermal processing, preventing buckling, paneling and pressure-related deformation while maintaining package integrity.
• Managing Infant Formula Can Production in a Clean Environment – Designing and managing a clean manufacturing process for infant formula cans, covering hygiene requirements, process optimisation and the mindset shift from retort can production to infant formula packaging.
• Operational Audits for High-Performance Can Making Lines – Using operational audits to identify and eliminate the real causes of downtime, quality defects and production losses in can manufacturing lines, while prioritising improvement opportunities and developing an effective action plan.
• Practical Shelf Life Testing – Designing and implementing an effective shelf-life testing programme, considering the interaction between filled products, tinplate, coatings and easy-open ends to ensure long term package performance.
The 3PC programme brings together two specialists with extensive experience across the global metal packaging industry.
Tjaart Schutte has more than 40 years of experience in the global metal packaging industry, including more than 37 years at Nampak Products Ltd, where he contributed to innovation, technical excellence and quality across can manufacturing operations. He is also the owner of CanConsult.
Andrew Buchan brings more than 35 years of experience in metal packaging, with a background spanning can manufacturing, R&D, quality, food safety, process improvement and operational excellence. His career includes technical and operational roles at Jamestrong Packaging, Ardagh Group, Amcor and Nampak, with experience across Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
The training programme forms part of the wider WCE format, which combines technical training with supplier presentations, roundtable discussions, exhibition and networking opportunities.
The objective is to create an environment where manufacturers can not only learn from experienced specialists, but also discover new technologies, equipment, materials and solutions while connecting directly with suppliers and other professionals from the metal packaging industry.
For manufacturers, canners and fillers, attendance at World Can Experience is free of charge, providing access to the technical training programme, supplier presentations, industry discussions and networking opportunities.
