ASI certifies 25 Ball facilities across North and Central America

Ball Beverage Packaging has achieved ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard Certification for the manufacture and supply of aluminium can bodies, can ends, and aluminium bottles at 25 facilities across Canada, Mexico and the USA.

  • Manufacturing of Beverage Can Bodies at facilities in the United States including Fairfield, (CA); Fort Atkinson (WI); Fort Worth (TX); Glendale (AZ); Goodyear (AZ); Kapolei (HI); Kent (WA); Monticello (IN); Phoenix (AZ); Pittston (PA); Rome (GA); Saratoga Springs (NY); St. Paul (MN); Tampa (FL); Wallkill (NY); and Williamsburg (VA); and Whitby in Canada; and Queretaro in Mexico.

The certifications bring the number of dual ASI Certified wholly owned Ball Corporation facilities to 66 worldwide.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain.

The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain.

It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors.

The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities.

The independent, third-party audits of the Ball Beverage Packaging North and Central America operations were carried out by Bureau Veritas Certification.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “ASI congratulates Ball Corporation on this significant achievement: dual ASI Certification at 25 Ball Beverage Packaging North and Central America sites.

“Ball Packaging has set itself the impressive goal of certifying all their beverage packaging operations to ASI Standards by the end of 2022.

“Their recent combined business and sustainability report also highlighted their progress on supply chain uptake of ASI.

“The company is demonstrating strong leadership in sustainability for beverage packaging and support for a global circular economy.”

“Achieving ASI certification for BPNCA is a testament to our unwavering commitment to be part of a responsible and transparent value chain,” said Kathleen Pitre, BPNCA president, Ball Corporation.

“We know that responsibly sourced, environmentally friendly products are important to consumers and our customers. We’re proud that our aluminium packaging solutions, with aluminium’s infinite recyclability, can meet consumer needs and help our customers meet their sustainability commitments.”
