Novelis aluminium scrap collection centres get ASI certification

Novelis, a leading sustainable aluminium solutions provider and the world leader in aluminium rolling and recycling, announced that it has been awarded Performance Standard Certifications from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) for its 14 scrap collection centres in Brazil.

This achievement recognises Novelis’ responsible manufacturing practices by ASI, a global, multi-stakeholder, non-profit standards setting and certification organisation.

Combined with Novelis’ strong focus on the circular economy and industry-leading levels of recycled content across its product range, the certification demonstrates Novelis’ ambition to be the aluminium industry leader in sustainability.

Novelis’ 14 collection centres throughout Brazil collect post-consumer aluminium beverage cans. In a circular economy fashion, Novelis collects the cans, recycles them into the same aluminium sheet product, which is then made into a new beverage can and returned to store shelves for consumption within as little as 60 days.

In 2021, Brazil recycled 98.7% of all cans sold nationwide. Of those, Novelis recycled 64%, which amounts to about 21 billion cans.

“As part of our circular economy business model, every year, Novelis collects and recycles 64% of the beverage cans recycled in Brazil,” said Eunice Lima, Director, Communications and Government Affairs, Novelis South America.

“Achieving the ASI Performance Standard Certification demonstrates that Novelis is appropriately addressing environmental, social and governance principles for the production of aluminium, and demonstrates that our production practices are responsible.”

Last year, Novelis received the ASI Performance Standard Certification at its Pindamonhangaba (SP) facility in Brazil. Most recently, three of the company’s plants in North America received Performance Standard Certifications.

In addition, Novelis has achieved both the ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Certifications at its 11 European manufacturing sites, and all rolled aluminium products of Novelis Korea are now sourced and produced in accordance with the ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard.

Novelis is committed to be a carbon-neutral company by 2050 or sooner and to reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2026. In addition, the company seeks to reduce waste to landfill by 20%, energy intensity by 10% and water intensity by 20% by 2026. Increasing the amount of recycled aluminium in its products is at the core of Novelis’ carbon reduction strategy.
