Company: MPMA

Location: East Sussex, UK or remote

To apply, email covering letter and CV to: debbie@mpma.org.uk

The Director is responsible for the overall leadership and management of MPMA Ltd, its operations, finances and communications. Reporting directly to the Officers of the Association and the elected Council.

The Chief Executive is the representative and spokesperson for the metal packaging sector and the role centres on written and oral communication skills involving significant contact with the media.

The applicant needs to understand the potential impact on the MPMA members of all regulatory activities and major political decisions and to ensure that the sector’s interests are both represented and protected during the development of new regulations.

The incumbent will need to develop and foster good working relationships with the members, government officials and relevant departments, public servants and colleagues in other packaging related trade associations: good networking and communications skills are essential.

Key Responsibilities

Protecting the interests of the members by engaging with the UK Government and devolved administrations of the UK by making representations directly to elected politicians and civil servants and by responding to Government consultations.

MPMA is also a member of various cross packaging material bodies such as INCPEN, OPRL and the Government’s Advisory Committee for Packaging. The Director needs to be able to both promote and defend the sector’s interest at these multi-material meetings.

There is also a requirement to work closely with our European counterparts, mainly through involvement in the Commissions and marketing activities of our European trade body, Metal Packaging Europe.

Promoting the key attributes of metal packaging through managing PR campaigns using professional consultants, interacting with the trade press and general media through interviews, blogs, presentations, social media etc.

Skills and Experience

Senior Management experience, preferable in the packaging industry, ideally the metal packaging sector: someone who can bring relevant experience as well as new ideas to the role.  Trade body experience desirable but not essential.

A high level of self-motivation and self-discipline, able to work with and motivate a small team working from separate locations.

Ability to network, build and maintain good working relationships with all the members, government officials and partners in other trade associations.

The role requires a neutral political approach.

Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to deliver high level presentations to the membership, the media, government and national and international conferences.

Good working knowledge of Microsoft word, PowerPoint, Outlook and an understanding of, and willingness, to engage with social media.

Awareness of relevant Competition Laws and an understanding of the importance of compliance practices.

Other

Working a flexible 4-day week, the candidate can operate from a home base or work from the MPMA office in East Sussex. However, it should be noted that there is a significant travel requirement both within the UK, especially London meetings, and mainland Europe as part of the job. A competitive remuneration package is on offer for the right candidate. Looking for a potential start date in Autumn 2023.
