Toyo Seikan begins production of lightweight beverage cans with CBR technology

Toyo Seikan Co. Ltd, a consolidated subsidiary of Toyo Seikan Group Holdings Ltd., has commenced production of aluminium beverage cans using the Compression Bottom Reform (CBR) technology, which reforms and strengthens the bottom of beverage cans to reduce weight, at Chitose Plant in Hokkaido, Japan.

CBR won the Gold Award in the Prototype category of the Cans of the Year Awards 2020, and this is the first commercialisation of CBR.

By using CBR, the weight of the can is reduced from the current 11.5g to 10.9g, and CO2 emissions per can are reduced by approximately 3% from the current can.

If all aluminium beverage can product lines to which CBR are considered applicable were to adopt its technology, CO2 emissions would be reduced by approximately 40,000 tons.

Compared to conventional can-making technologies, CBR is an innovative technology that offers both quality and weight savings, such as higher can bottom pressure resistance strength, and also leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions due to the reduced use of aluminium materials.

Toyo Seikan continues to promote the aluminium beverage can with CBR by expanding its use to our manufacturing bases nationwide, and we aim to achieve the lightest weight can ever made at the same time.
