Eviosys sets new 2030 GHG goal

Global giant in the sustainable packaging industry, Eviosys, has once again surpassed its emissions reduction goals, achieving a significant 20% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the baseline year of 2020, which has been outlined in its third annual ESG Report.

This year’s impressive progress has accelerated Eviosys’ timeline by four years, enabling the company to set its most ambitious target yet, of 50% reduction in emissions by 2030. This achievement follows three years of hard work by the business to enhance its sustainability and redefine industry standards for the pursuit of net zero by 2050.

And now, as a further demonstration of Eviosys’ steadfast commitment to leading from the front, the business has submitted their emissions reduction objectives to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) setting an example to the rest of the industry.

In a groundbreaking move, Eviosys has also measured its scope 3 emissions for the first time. Building on its success in scopes 1 and 2, the company has now established ambitious long-term goals for scope 3, continuing a long tradition of collaborative work with their suppliers and customers to ensure all parties’ goals to reduce emissions across the value chain are aligned.

In recognition of these impressive achievements and ambitions, Eviosys has been awarded the prestigious Platinum recognition from EcoVadis, placing it within the top 1% of the 100,000 companies evaluated globally after scoring a perfect 100/100 for environmental stewardship.

Addressing Emissions from the Inside Out

Thanks to significant investments in the latest oxidisers and incinerators across all plants, Eviosys has drastically reduced VOC emissions, seeing a 10% reduction on 2022, which represents a 20% cumulative reduction since 2020.

The past year has also seen Eviosys undertake major upgrades to several of its plants, including those in Murcia and Mérida, to increase renewable energy use. Building on these successes, Eviosys plans to install solar panels at two additional manufacturing facilities this year, significantly increasing the proportion of renewable energy used across the company.

Looking ahead, Eviosys is tackling greenhouse gas emissions throughout the value chain, both up- and down-stream, with activities to address the carbon intensity of steel production, and reducing food waste, among others. As part of this, Eviosys ensures that all of its steel suppliers are certified by ResponsibleSteel and commit to a minimum 30% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050.

Additionally, Eviosys is partnering with charities such as FareShare to support the fight against food waste, championing canning as a solution for the preservation of surplus food. As part of this effort, Eviosys has donated 112,500 cans, saving FareShare funds that can be spent on delivering more surplus food.

Our People Are Key to Our Progression

To ensure that this commitment to sustainability is echoed business-wide, effective training programmes have been instrumental in this progress, with 192 employees receiving sustainability training in 2023. All managers globally have now been provided with education on how sustainability affects each area of the business – a pioneering scheme in the industry that has been hugely beneficial internally.

In line with its inclusion and diversity goals, in 2023, Eviosys’ pay gap stood at 4.4%, significantly lower than both the industry average and the OECD pay gap benchmark of 12%. Furthermore, 30% of managerial positions within the company are now filled by women, setting Eviosys apart in terms of its gender equality, and driving change within the manufacturing industry.

Driving change through product innovation

At the heart of Eviosys’ operations is its products. Always listening to the needs of customers and end users, Eviosys ensures that its ESG principles are central to the design and manufacturing of their products right from their conception. 2023 saw the launch of Ecopeel™, a food can product that has seen a 20% decrease in CO2 emissions due to a reduction in material usage, and an easier opening mechanism to enhance the inclusivity of the product. With further product launches in 2024, set to include a new addition to the Orbit™ range, the year ahead already presents further opportunities for Eviosys’ innovation to shine as an example for the industry.

Looking ahead to the rest of 2024, Eviosys remains steadfast in its pursuit of sustainability excellence. With a clear strategy for continuous improvement across all ESG dimensions, the company is committed to promoting and protecting its customers’ products, communities, and the Earth, delivering enduring value to investors, partners, and the planet.

Reflecting on this year’s impressive progress, Tomás López, CEO of Eviosys said: “In a world that is battling the race against climate change, I am proud to see the extraordinary achievements of the past year, which Eviosys allowed us to exceed our target by four years.  We remain focused on the future with even bigger goals, such as reducing emissions by 50% before 2030. Looking ahead to 2024, we remain constant in our pursuit of sustainability excellence, with a clear strategy and plan in place for continuous improvement and trailblazing for the industry to follow.”
