Portugal to introduce DRS by 2026
Portugal is preparing to introduce a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in 2026, aiming to enhance recycling rates and strengthen its waste management system.
The program will be overseen by SDR Portugal, with Sensoneo providing the technological infrastructure. By selecting Sensoneo, Portugal joins a growing list of European nations relying on the company’s expertise in managing DRS programs.
As the first mainland country in Southern Europe to implement a nationwide DRS, Portugal is positioning itself as a sustainability trailblazer. While Malta introduced a similar initiative in 2022, Portugal’s model is expected to influence other nearby nations, such as Spain, France, and Italy. This initiative highlights Portugal’s dedication to circular economy principles and its commitment to environmental responsibility.
Sensoneo’s technology will power the entire system, covering collection, reverse logistics, and waste tracking. The scheme will feature user-friendly mobile applications to encourage public participation and simplify the recycling process.
A key aspect of Portugal’s DRS is the inclusion of hotels, restaurants, and catering businesses (HoReCa sector). By learning from Malta’s success, where HoReCa participation significantly boosted collection rates, Portugal aims to optimise the system’s efficiency.
To make recycling accessible, the country plans to establish between 7,000 and 10,000 collection points. This extensive network will make it easier for consumers to return their containers, helping increase recycling rates and promote a more sustainable waste management system.
