Russian government seizes US-owned canned food producer

Glavprodukt, the US-owned company that is the largest canned food producer in Russia, has been seized by the Russian Federation.

According to records in the Unified State Register of Legal Entities, as of 28 July, the state is now listed as the owner of Promselkhozinvest LLC, the core legal entity within the Glavprodukt holding.

Earlier, on July 11, the Moscow Arbitration Court upheld a lawsuit filed by the Prosecutor General’s Office against the US-based Universal Beverage Company—which previously owned Glavprodukt—and its shareholder, Leonid Smirnov. The court ruled to transfer the group’s primary assets to state ownership.

This legal action was initiated in early March 2025. In May, the proceedings were moved to a closed session.

Court documents indicate that the lawsuit aimed to safeguard national economic sovereignty by declaring certain transactions invalid and reclaiming assets on behalf of the Russian state.

As reported by Vedomosti, the Prosecutor General’s Office requested that the key enterprises within the holding be transferred to the state and accused Smirnov of moving nearly 1.4 billion rubles to JPMorgan Chase accounts in the US.

These transfers allegedly violated capital control measures, as they were broken into amounts under 10 million rubles and presented as profit payments to firms linked to the Glavprodukt Group.

“They claimed they took my company to secure food for Russia. But they are not living up to this purpose, this justification,” Smirnov told Reuters.

By presidential order, the Federal Agency for State Property Management took temporary control of Glavprodukt’s assets in October 2024.

Established in 1999, Glavprodukt estimates its market share in Russia at roughly 10% in canned meat, 7% in dairy products, and up to 3% in canned fish.
