Coca-Cola to launch 7.5-ounce mini cans

Coca-Cola is set to launch 7.5-ounce mini cans of several of its leading soft drink brands in US convenience stores early next year.

The company says it is aiming to attract budget-conscious and calorie-aware consumers with smaller, more affordable packaging.

The new single-serve cans, priced at a suggested $1.29, will contain 90 calories each, compared with 240 calories in the standard 20-ounce PET bottle. Brands including Coca-Cola, Coke Zero Sugar, Cherry Coke, Sprite, and Fanta will be available in the new format.

“Affordability and recruitment are what we’re trying to do,” said Joel Bishop, president of commercial leadership for Coca-Cola North America. “There’s not a lot of under-$2 offerings.”

Coca-Cola has seen uneven U.S. soda demand, with recent revenue growth driven more by price increases than by higher sales volumes. The company hopes the mini cans—already popular in multipacks at retailers like Costco and Kroger—will help drive trial and expand consumption occasions.

In addition, Coca-Cola will introduce glass bottles of its flagship cola made with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup later this year. The move follows growing consumer interest in “Mexican Coke,” long favoured for its distinct taste profile.
