Every Can Counts launches recycling pilot programme at East Potomac Golf Links
Every Can Counts U.S. has launched a new aluminium beverage can recycling activation at East Potomac Golf Links, in partnership with National Links Trust.
This year-long pilot programme is the first golf course activation for Every Can Counts U.S. and designed to make recycling easier for golfers and visitors while helping keep valuable aluminium beverage cans in circulation and out of landfills.
The collaboration brings two DC-themed recycling cages, plus recycling bins, and other educational signage to East Potomac Golf Links—one of the most beloved public golf destinations in the nation’s capital.
The installation highlights the power of aluminium recycling and encourages players to make every can count both on and off the course.
“Public golf courses are green spaces where community and sustainability intersect,” said Tim Ebner, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Can Manufacturers Institute and a lead organiser of the Every Can Counts U.S. chapter. “Through this new pilot program with National Links Trust, we are showing that small actions—like recycling your used aluminium beverage can—make an enormous difference. Aluminium beverage cans are the most sustainable beverage package on virtually every measure, and the revenue generation of this programme is unique to beverage cans given their relatively high scrap value.”
In fact, every can collected for recycling at East Potomac Golf Links will be sold for its scrap aluminium value at Potomac Metals, Inc., the local scrapyard partner. Proceeds from the redemption will go back into the golf course to support future sustainability programmes and events.
“We’re excited to partner with Every Can Counts to bring more visible and effective recycling opportunities to East Potomac Golf Links,” said Andrew Szunyog, Director of Sustainability at National Links Trust. “Our golfers care deeply about this course and the environment. Thanks to the new recycling bins and the DC-themed recycling cages, visitors now have a fun, easy, and accessible way to take part in recycling used beverage cans that will eventually help support our future programmes.”
National Links Trust, the nonprofit organisation that manages Washington, D.C.’s three public golf courses, has a mission to positively impact our community and change lives through affordable and accessible municipal golf. The partnership with Every Can Counts U.S. aligns with the organisation’s sustainability goals and reinforces a commitment to environmental stewardship.
The Every Can Counts U.S. programme, supported by the Can Manufacturers Institute, is an away-from-home recycling initiative designed to inspire people to recycle their aluminium beverage cans wherever they use them. Aluminium is infinitely recyclable, and aluminium beverage cans get recycled into new cans in as little as 60 days on average.
Visitors to East Potomac Golf Links can use the green-coloured Every Can Counts U.S. recycling bins adjacent to the clubhouse, driving range, mini-golf course, and throughout each of the golf links.
The pilot programme was launched at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on 15 October with leaders from Every Can Counts U.S., National Links Trust, DC Council member Charles Allen, and Potomac Metals, Inc.
