Ball supplies COP30 with canned water
As the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) begins in Brazil, Ball Corporation is highlighting aluminium’s role in building a circular economy by supplying the event with millions of locally produced canned waters.
Aluminium at the Core of Circularity
Aluminium cans remain the world’s most recycled beverage container — and Brazil leads the charge. The country has maintained a recycling rate of over 95% for aluminium cans for more than 15 years. Globally, around 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use. Recycling aluminium requires 95% less energy than producing it from raw materials, making it one of the most sustainable packaging options available.
Local Production for Global Impact
As the official supplier of canned water for COP30, Ball partnered with HEINEKEN Spin and Amapura to produce 2.5 million cans for the event. Of these, 1.5 million are branded under Mamba Water and over 1 million under Amapura.
The cans were manufactured in Brazil using 78% recycled aluminium and powered entirely by renewable electricity — underscoring Ball’s commitment to low-carbon production and local collaboration.
Sustainability Beyond the Conference
Ball’s engagement with COP30 extends beyond packaging. Through the Mamba Water Project, the company is supporting the delivery of more than 20 million litres of potable water to local communities in Pará via a new treatment plant. Amapura, meanwhile, plans to donate a portion of its future sales to reforestation and water access initiatives across the Amazon.
Ball is also taking steps to offset the carbon footprint associated with the cans produced for COP30, furthering its ambition of a waste-free world.
“More Than Packaging”
“Being present at COP30 reinforces our purpose of positioning aluminium as a strategic solution for sustainability,” says Tamires Silvestre, sustainability director for Ball in South America.
“This initiative reflects what we believe: that partnerships committed to positive impact broaden the reach of our supply chain and strengthen the future of the planet.”
As COP30 unfolds, Ball’s message is clear: every can tells a story of circularity — and every sip of water is a reminder that sustainability starts with smart material choices.
