Sonoco debuts recyclable steel cans and microwaveable bowls
Global packaging provider Sonoco showcased its latest advancements in sustainable rigid metal packaging at Interpack 2026, introducing two distinct formats designed to displace plastic and multi-material structures.
The CapOnCan: A Mono-Material Resealable Solution
Designed as a direct alternative to traditional glass-and-metal jar combinations, the new CapOnCan features a fully metallic, mono-material construction. By pairing a standard metal body with a hermetically sealed, reclosable metal cap, the design optimizes end-of-life recycling.
Key Features & Advantages:
- Material Efficiency: Delivers a significantly lighter tare weight compared to glass jars, driving down logistics costs and carbon footprints across the supply chain.
- Economic Incentives: The single-material steel construction helps brands lower Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees in regions with strict eco-modulation penalties.
- Consumer Convenience: Provides secure reclosure for refrigeration after opening, making it highly suited for bulk family-sized portions and the pet food sector.
AFNOR-Certified Microwaveable Metal Bowls
In a bid to capture share from conventional plastic ready-meal trays, Sonoco also unveiled a line of specialised metal bowls. The packaging has earned official microwave-safe certification from the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
This development allows ready-meal brands to maintain the high-barrier protection, long shelf life, and infinite recyclability of steel while meeting consumer demand for microwave convenience.
