Achieving carbon neutrality through circularity

The danger of failing to address climate change has become abundantly clear in recent years as atmospheric carbon levels trigger more frequent more severe disasters.

In 2021, the United States alone was hit by 20 separate billion-dollar climate disasters, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This growing sense of urgency has spurred leaders to action, with net-zero emissions pledges now having been made by countries representing 85% of the world’s population and 90% of gross domestic product.

There are encouraging signs that it could be possible to overcome modern society’s reliance on fossil fuels. Such developments could give the impression that society is on track to avert the worst impacts of global warming by reducing net carbon emissions to zero by around 2050. This is not the case, however. As the IEA observes, “A new energy economy is emerging, but not yet quickly enough to reach net zero by 2050.”

Mostly this is because of several so-called hard-to-abate sectors where the road to decarbonisation remains challenging—and unclear. Reuters Events latest whitepaper looks at how embracing circular economy practices will be key to achieving carbon neutrality in these sectors. Key Themes include:

  • The Scale of the Challenge – Why you need to care about the circular economy
  • The Road to Carbon Neutrality – Explore the developing technologies and processes that will be used to establish a circular economy
  • Benefits of Circularity – How does addressing carbon neutrality result in economic benefits?

The circular economy is becoming, not just a form of insurance for the planet, but for heavy industry too. Decarbonizing industry and investing in a circular economy will require collaboration, innovation, and investment. And speed is of the essence.
