Novelis plant in China gets ASI certification

Novelis Inc. announced that its Zhenjiang Plant in Jiangsu Province, China, has been awarded the Performance Standard Certification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), a global, multi-stakeholder, non-profit standards setting and certification organisation.

This accreditation is a significant step forward in Novelis’ pursuit of ASI certifications in China as both its Zhenjiang and Changzhou plants have achieved the Performance Standard Certification.

“We are delighted that Novelis’ Zhenjiang plant is now certified to meet ASI’s environmental, social and governance standards,” said James Liu, Managing Director of Novelis China.

“Driven by our purpose of Shaping a Sustainable World Together, we continuously dedicate ourselves to being the most trusted partner for our customers and to advancing the use of low-carbon, sustainable aluminium solutions to accelerate the transition to a circular economy in partnership with various stakeholders in China.”

As a leading sustainable aluminium solutions provider and the world leader in aluminium rolling and recycling, Novelis has been prioritising reducing its carbon footprint and that of its customers.

As such, Novelis has committed to be carbon-neutral by 2050 or sooner and to reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2026.

The “dual carbon” goals, which are in line with the core concept of China’s high-quality development, have become the major focus for businesses in the country.

Increasing the amount of recycled aluminium in its products is at the core of Novelis’ carbon reduction strategy. In addition, the company seeks to reduce waste to landfill by 20%, energy intensity by 10% and water intensity by 10% by 2026.

Novelis aims to achieve ASI certifications in all its plants worldwide. Novelis has achieved both the ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Certifications at all of its Korean and European manufacturing sites.

In Brazil, Novelis’ Pindamonhangaba facility and all of its 14 scrap collection centres hold the ASI Performance Standard Certification. In addition, three of the company’s plants in North America hold Performance Standard Certifications.
