Trivium makes major step in decarbonisation journey

Trivium Packaging has announced a major step forward in its decarbonisation journey through a partnership with its aluminium supplier, Aluar Aluminio Argentino, which has achieved certification to deliver low-carbon primary aluminium using a mass balance approach.

The achievement positions Aluar among the world’s lowest emitters of primary aluminium. According to the International Aluminium Institute, the global average footprint for primary aluminium production was 15.1 tCO₂e per ton in 2022.

In comparison, Aluar’s aluminium — produced with a cleaner energy mix — registers just 3.58 tCO₂e per ton, roughly four times lower than the global average.

For Trivium, reducing the carbon intensity of raw materials is key to achieving its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated climate goals. Scope 3 emissions, particularly those from raw materials, make up the majority of the company’s greenhouse gas footprint.

The company plans to begin integrating Aluar’s low-carbon aluminium into its Argentine and Brazilian operations, prioritising customer programs with climate targets that can benefit from the verified reductions. Trivium will also track and report the share of low-carbon aluminium used and its impact on product footprints.

Trivium’s decarbonisation strategy targets a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030, based on 2020 levels, with an ultimate goal of net-zero value chain emissions by 2050.
