Can Makers UK appoints new chair
Can Makers UK, the organisation representing manufacturers of beverage cans in the UK, has appointed John O’Maoileoin as its chair.
O’Maoileoin, who serves as global group sustainability director at CANPACK, takes over from Tim Conybeare, commercial director for UK & Ireland at Crown Bevcan EMEA, following the completion of Conybeare’s term under the group’s rotating leadership system.
O’Maoileoin brings more than 15 years of commercial experience, having held senior roles at CANPACK, Aldi, Dairy Crest and Tesco.
“We have seen real progress across the can industry in the last few years, from stronger recycling performance to new formats and designs that reflect how consumer expectations are changing,” John said.
“Consumers want high-quality packaging that is convenient and sustainable, and the can continues to deliver on all fronts, helping brands to drive improvements in environmental performance.
“My background in sustainability and brand communication has given me a clear view of how quickly expectations are evolving from consumers, brands and retailers, as well as policymakers and the wider value chain. The beverage can industry is ideally positioned to support the shared ambition for a more circular economy, while helping brands to establish a premium position in their market.”
Can Makers UK has recently focused on promoting the advantages of beverage cans through a variety of initiatives. These include commissioning consumer research into recycling behaviours and preferences, celebrating excellence in packaging through its Design Accolades, and publishing thought leadership on the expansion of categories such as wine, ready-to-drink cocktails and functional beverages in cans.
O’Maoileoin also paid tribute to his predecessor, thanking Conybeare for his leadership and guidance during a significant period for the association. He said he looks forward to continuing and building on that work in collaboration with members and stakeholders across the industry.
