The Brazilian Aluminum Can Association (Abralatas) has named Thais Fagury as its new CEO. With extensive experience in the metal packaging industry and a career focused on sustainability, the circular economy, reverse logistics and institutional affairs, Fagury takes the helm as the industry navigates a period of transformation and growing debate over competitiveness, circularity and the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Over nearly two decades, Fagury has built a career closely tied to the metal packaging industry and the environmental agenda. She served as president of the Brazilian Steel Packaging Association (Abeaço) from 2007 to 2026 and led Prolata Reciclagem from 2012 to 2026.

Her experience also includes working with companies, industry associations, government officials and other stakeholders involved in developing and implementing policies related to waste management and the circular economy. More recently, Fagury joined the Fiscal Council of the Brazilian Packaging Association (ABRE), expanding her involvement in discussions on the development and competitiveness of Brazil’s packaging industry.

At Abralatas, Fagury will focus on strengthening the institutional representation of Brazil’s aluminum can industry and expanding dialogue across the value chain, including manufacturers, brands, retailers, recyclers and recycling workers. Circularity, decarbonisation, innovation, industrial competitiveness and the advancement of reverse logistics will be among the priorities of her tenure.

“Taking on the leadership of Abralatas is an opportunity to contribute to an industry that has built a widely recognised circular value chain in Brazil and plays an important role in discussions around innovation, competitiveness and sustainability,” Fagury said. “I want to bring my experience to the work already being carried out by the association, broadening dialogue across the value chain and with society to advance priorities that are strategic not only for the industry, but also for the development of an increasingly circular, low-carbon economy.”

Fagury holds a degree in Food Engineering from Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia, an MBA in Business Management from the University of São Paulo (USP) and a postgraduate degree in Marketing from ESPM. Before taking on leadership roles at industry associations, she worked in the food and sugar-and-ethanol industries and on projects related to packaging and environmental issues. She also teaches Metal Packaging in the postgraduate Packaging Engineering programme at Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia.

Fagury’s appointment strengthens Abralatas’ role as the representative of Brazil’s aluminum can industry and its participation in key discussions shaping the future of packaging, recycling and the circular economy in the country.
